The Morning Commute
Now that I have started working regular hours I now have "morning commute". I take a bus to work and it leaves every 20 min, which means if I catch the bus that I aim to catch then I am 10 min early, but if I miss it I will be 10 min late, which is bad news considering 10 min is one third of a patient treatment time. It takes me 15 min to walk to the bus stop. So yesterday, I left with only 12 in to catch my bus, and this is assuming that it doesn't decide to leave a minute or two early. So, now I'm rushed. In the US people rushing to work is generally a little bit more dangerous than a relaxed, on time commuter. People who rush are often speeding, more aggressive, and less defensive, increasing the risk of a car accident and serrious injury. Here, however, a rushed commute is arguably more healthy for the commuter because it results in either speed walking or running to catch the public transportation. The transportation never changes it's speed or schedule because one person is in a hurry, so the only thing you can do is rush yourself or leave on time. The only downside of a morning jog to the bus is that the humidity and heat quickly turn your work clothes into a sweaty mess. But at least you get a little work out in. That may be why people here are more fit...daily commutes usually include 1-2 miles of walking (or jogging). Forcing a little exercise into the daily routine. I love it! I enjoy having my daily walk/jog instead of just sitting in my car for 30 min.
